Koen, where did you get these images?  They're talking about the middle on over at GameSquad (http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?t=80879  post #5 )and I see that it is in the LIFE magazine photo archive you've linked elsewhere.  What about the other two pictures?  Where are they from?

I do not know the answer to your sideshield question. I  suspect that since they randomly appear, it was either a post production addition, or an easily damaged item, that was in short supply. My money is on the latter.

That is absolutely an M8 Greyhound. Nothing else looks like that vehicle.

Combat damage is easily attributable to the condition of the vehicle.

Well you know me, better late than never but this thread has interested me...

So here is a 4th Photo...



Here is the information with the photo (I can not verify it though):
Unit: 2nd Company,I./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt 1,  Kampfgruppe Hansen.
Name: Walter Armbrusch. ****This has been questioned****
Rank: SS-Schütze as an MG-42 gunner.
Vehicle: M8 Greyhound of the 14th Cavalry Group, 18th Recon. Troop C, 1st Platoon
December 18, 1944, very early in the morning, the American "14th Cavalry Group" had gotten in an ambush of the German "Kampfgruppe Hansen" on the road between Poteau and Recht.

Now here is the kicker, the photo's that have become famous are apparently ones from propaganda films made shortly after the event.

Basically I think we are looking at two separate events and the pictures that have become famous are from the second event.

Event 1: 14th Cavalry Group, 18th Recon. Troop C, 1st Platoon are ambushed during the battle of the Bulge but no photo's exist.
Event 2: The ambushed vehicles are used by a film crew to recreate the event and those photos become famous.

In a lot of ways a staged event much in the same way the Okinawa flag planting was.

If you look close at the pictures you see no bodies or any other glimp of the American soldiers, so yes very clear evidence it was set up Smiley
On the monument you see only two names of fallen soldiers, so I guess the rest of the platoon fled or was captured.
