Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Those looking to replace their aging CMx1 series of tactical WWII games should take a look at the Panzer Command series.

It's not CM. It looks alot like CM and at first glance it seems to be very much like CM but after the first hour you will know it's very different.

The core to comparing the two is that PC is a game that has orders given from the top down. Platoons are given different order sets and then individual units can be adjusted from there. It takes some getting used to after CM but you don't have to give every unit on the map it's own orders. PC plays very much faster for me than CM did.

The graphics IMO are a bit better than CM. Their method of PBEM takes some getting used to. You send two files at once. It's not bad but very different from what you're used to.

The biggest issue I have with the PC series is the infantry combat model. At the moment it isn't as good as it could be. That I'm told will change with the next release. All games in the series automatically back code the previous games to have the most modern coding. So, no need for doing the same game again later, or us having to buy the same game again later, just to get it upgraded.

Matrix is very quick to respond to the gamers requests and comments as well. Much different attitude than those that sell CM.

In short this is a game series you should take a look at. It may not be for you but if it is there seem to be some great things in store for the PC series. Right at a time when those liking what CM had to offer are looking at nothing from the CM world.

Good Hunting.

During the past month there has been a flurry of mods and improvements to PCK.

An official patch has been released as well a beta version map maker. While I have yet to make a map with it those that do are showing maps being made in under 10 minutes.

Even at 6 times that long thats a map in an hour. Which would be good for any map editor included with any game.

There are a flurry of vehicle mods coming from all directions as well. PC is designed to be mod friendly.

There is a promised new support release for PCK by the end of the year. (December 2008)

**** This post by Geordie was brought over from the original WaT site by MR *****

Although I have owned PzK for a while, my old system was just not up to the job of playing it with justice.  I recently came back to it and have discovered that its not a bad game.

While up front it looks like a CM clone it does play differently from CM.  The graphics, while not stunning are an improvement over CM as you would expect from a game 8 years farther down the line.

What you have to do is clear your mind and approach this game without trying to compare it to CM.

The most immediate thing you notice when firing up PzK is that graphically its quite good, but not a stunner.  Although the game is there to be modded and I have read that the armour you see in the game now isn’t Hi-Res.   The Tanks look like the real tanks and not some crude representaion, so if its realism your after your on a winner here.  The infantry are not represented in a 1-1 fashion and either 3 or 5 men represent an infantry squad.

Game play for single player is fairly straightforward.  You right click on your vehicle and a comprehensive, but easy to use menu pops up.  You can set orders for a whole Tank platoon or an individual vehicle and its both quick and easy.  The game is divided into 40-second segments and once you have given the orders you click go, the AI decides what it wants to do and then plays the turn.  Then you have a reaction phase where you can assess the battlefield and issue reaction orders to your troops for anything they have encountered in the previous 40 seconds.

This action/reaction system takes a wee bit of getting used to, but after an hour or so it tends to slip into the background.  Gameplay is smooth and all of the vehicles move as they should.  However, it is not possible to set any waypoints for your forces, which is a bit of a let down.  Sometimes you want to set doglegs or add in extra turns so that your forces can arrive at a point in time of your choosing.

Armour moves and fights well, things like Borg spotting seem to be absent too, which is another good feature.  A press on the F-12 key makes most of the trees disappear so that you can get on with your battles.  The Ai isn’t too bad but obviously isn’t a human.  Tank duels feel real and not RTS, you believe that your armour has a chance and that flank and rear shots on say a Tiger are the way to go.

There are a few things Id like to see addressed though.  The infantry model needs some attention.  Infantry is just not this games forte, they don’t look too well moving in a short of shuffle where their legs seem to move faster than their arms.  They don’t fight very well, don’t seem to benefit from cover and there is no real house to house fighting in this game.  The infantry seem underpowered too.  The sound is terrible and harks back to Steel Panthers or something and there are not too many opportunities to change the sound as there are not too many sound files associated with the game.  This is probably my biggest issue with the game at the moment.

Another downside is the over complication of the PBEM games.  Each turn needs both an orders and reaction phase, which means two emails and can be rather confusing at times.  This may be a driving factor in turning gamers away from multi player and should really be addressed too if at all possible.

Overall PzK is a good wargame, focussing on armour rather than infantry, but that’s no bad thing as it doesn’t pretend to be an exact simulation of Eastern Front combat.  The battles are fluid and feel realistic, the armour performs well and real life tactics need to be used to achieve your aims in any given scenario.  It has a few foibles, sound being the main one, but it plays well and after an hour or so you get immersed into it.  If youre looking for a WW2  Eastern Front armoured wargame then this is a definite one to try out.

MR,
I was considering trying out Panzer Commander.  I have run the demo for the Winter Storm version, and thought it had promise.

I was wondering though.  Is it worth getting both the Kharkov and the Winter Storm versions, or just the Kharkov version, as it is upgraded and improved?  I am leaning towards just getting Kharkov, but wouldn't really want to miss out by not getting both.  Still, there is the cost angle, of $40 for Kharkov alone, or $75 for both.  Just thought I would pick your brain on this.

  Your input would be appreciated.

Panzer Command: Operation Winter Storm is upgraded to the same level as Panzer Command: Kharkov. PCK back codes the first game so that all improvements are in the both games when you get them. I have them both and as  you say, they show promise. If I were going to get one I'd recommend getting them both.

I can't help but feel that this game is still smellah, next to CM.  Oh how I wish it was as good as CM, I really really do!!

The demo has such a clunky feel to it... just can't get into it.

Cheers!

This game isn't now, nor will it ever be, CM.

What it could be is, BETTER THAN CM.....if Matrix keeps going. The first one in the series Panzer Command: Operation Winter Storm was so bad that I almost kept right on going. The demo for that game just confirmed it for me. Only after PC:Kharkov came out did it even begin to get to looking like a game that could go places.

We'll see what Matrix does with it. They have the opportunity. But so have lots of other companies and CM still sits at the top of the heap.

After several start stops to this game, i find that I am totally put of by the order and reaction phase.  They really need to sort this out before it can become a popular game.

The whole thing just seems so clunky to me.

CM still has the advantage and CMSF plays better too, the next CM ww2 game will definitely play better than this as well.

Its not a Turkey though, and you can have fun with it, but for me its one of those games that you come back to every few weeks, play a bit and then move on.  At least it plays in Vista though.

You can send single files in PBEM if the 2 file system seems out of order.

I'm not happy with the 2 phase turn where all you can do for 40 seconds is reassign a target or retreat. But there are things I don't like about other games as well.

Let me add my first impressions: It indeed isn't CM and I'm missing a few features CM had. On the other hand I have to say with every scenraio I play I like it more and It got a few really nice features I'd have liked to be in CM.
The user interface is easy to understand and quick to master and the shortcuts are easy to memorize. Sounds are nice in general, air support also seems modelled well (in the '44 demo battle the IL-2s almost exculisvely hit their own guys!) and the terrain is easily distinguishable thanks to the "painter option" of the scenario editor. Vehicle models are nice and detailed, which adds to the immersion.
What I dislike are infantry modles (including crews) - those could definitely profit from a facelift, too.

I needed a while to realize what I liked so much about PCO - it FEELS like something, it doesn't just LOOK. And it feels like a tabletop wargame with models and terrain I built myself. Now they only need a good texture artist - most vehicles still look ugly as hell! Grijns

The models were kept in lower poly counts to allow for older machines to run the game. That's a choice Matrix made.

I don't mean the models PER SE (although I still spot an error here and there) but rather the textures. Overall a nice effort, but they can be improved upon (very much like CMx1). Still, the infantry could do with a couple more polygons and I'm sure the game would still run on older systems.

From what I know they can easily be modded, you should also be able to create your own units because nothing is hardcoded ( like in CM1)

My mistake. I thought you were talking about the vehicle display skins.

The textures are a result of how the scenario designer chose to display the terrain. There are two settings with a range from 1 to 999 and two other settings that have a range of 20 more. That's a texture display range of 399,200,400. Then there is a directional display for the terrain texture that covers the 360 degrees of the compass. If you consider that to be 360 more options for display you come up with a total of 12,201,553,224,000  different display options for a single texture in PCO. I'm pretty sure that's not a poly issue. I can display the terrain textures showing from completely smooth to completely rough and everything in between. No other games terrain display features come anywhere near PCO's ability for the designer to show a texture as they wish. Ours are not a single tile that displays only one way in the game but it's a single pixel shown any way the designer wants to show it.

Good Hunting.

I was mainly talking about the vehicle skins - the terrain and building skins ar very nice, but the old PCK textures do stand out a lot compared to the new ones. And some vehicle textures are a bit too bland for my liking (like the T-34/85 or the T-35). That doesn't take away from the experience, though, even if I need to get much better - the second scenario I tried was a defeat although I thought everything was going well... Grijns

The models for PCO are set so that lower end machines can play them. We set the poly size so that when there are battles involving 50 T-34's and 30 PzIV's the game would run. This isn't like a battle with 5 Shermans vs a single StuG!  hihi

This is the Eastern Front!  Brede lach

Not to mention that there are models for both summer and winter. PCO covers the entire range of vehicles from 1941 through the end of the war in 1945. Not like the 4 months you're used to seeing. If we only had that range of time and season our vehicles could be much better as well.

Instead of a few Hi-Res models we put the emphasis on game play and making the entire theater available to you for your gaming. It was thought that good game play and extreme variety was a better idea than a short time period with few vehicles involved.

The decision was made early on to bring forward the vehicles, scenarios and maps from both PC:OWS and PC:K and have them all be upgraded by the changes made in PC:O. Some of the older models were kept in the process.

Good Hunting.

Makes sense and I understand that. I have fought a battle with around 3 dozen tanks in it in CMBN already and it ran very smoothly, though... Grijns

Anyway, currently people only complain that the game looks more than CMBO than anything else so I guess we need better textures. Everyone ssem to like the vehicle variety and the large number of differetn buildings and other stuff...

When you're talking game performance you're not just talking about a single item on the list. Several things come into play. Everybody wants to take one look at a game a cry "Bad Graphics" even while they are telling you that the graphics aren't that important.

PCO has a lot of different game play options that use computing resources. The vehicle models and ground textures are just two simple parts of that equation. I think that once gamers actually play PCO a bit then there will be a bigger appreciation for what's been done.

Also, there is always the ability to add Hi-Res textures and vehicle mods to the game by anyone with the skill to make them. There has already been a PzII added in Hi-Res since the release of the game.

PCO can really end up where gamers and modders take it. The modders have already added 11 mods to the game in the first full week after release. That's a pretty large support effort for just the first week.

I can't wait for PC to move out beyond the Eastern Front to other paces and times. There are already being discussed other times besides 1939-1945 and other places besides Europe. Anyplace could be added with ground textures and of course any vehicle or weapons system can be added by creating the xml files for them.

So, while at the moment, some of the graphics seem a bit sub-par I would tell anyone to play the game and then decide. Do you want the flashy graphics or flashy game play?

Because, in the PC series at least, flashy graphics can be changed with a few mods, flashy game play couldn't be fixed it were missing. Lucky for us it was flashy game play that Matrix decided to focus on.

Good Hunting.
