Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. The Real Irish Republican Army, otherwise known as the Real IRA (RIRA) or True IRA and styling itself as Óglaigh na hÉireann (Volunteers of Ireland), is a paramilitary organisation which aims to bring about a united Ireland. The RIRA was formed in 1997 following a split in the Provisional Irish Republican Army. It is an illegal organisation in the Republic of Ireland and designated as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom and the United States. The organisation has been responsible for a number of bombings in Northern Ireland and England, including the 15 August 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people. On 7 March 2009 RIRA members killed two British soldiers and injured two more and two civilians in an attack on the Massereene Barracks, the most significant RIRA action for more than a decade.

what now?

is this the (re)start?
is this a single action?

audio report

Quote
The men were named by the MoD this morning as Sapper Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham, and Sapper Cengiz Azimkar, 21, from Wood Green, London. They were both from 38 Engineer Regiment and had been due to leave for Afghanistan this week.

A Polish man wounded during the attack while delivering pizza to the soldiers is fighting for his life. The 32-year-old was one of two delivery men shot and critically wounded.

But as the soldiers walked out to get their food, the terrorists struck. The driver stayed with the vehicle, engine running, while his comrades jumped out and raked the front of the barracks with semi-automatic gunfire.
Having hit their targets, they moved in for the kill and finished off the two young soldiers as they lay wounded on the ground. It was all over in a matter of minutes.

Both the Real IRA, which claimed responsibility for the killing of two soldiers at the weekend, and Continuity IRA, which says it shot dead a policeman last night, are dissident republican groups that split from the Provisional IRA.

And, just as a reminder as victims are so easily forgotten (still  one lady in coma):

Today, 4 yrs ago, we had the train attacks in Madrid, the 11M terrorist attack that was the worst in history here with 200+ dead and 1000+ injured (and, as has been proven, could easily be repeated...).

well, I have to rectify, it was *5* yrs yesterday.

And, yes, they got them all and most of them (some commited suicide in the Leganese Apartment incident: http://www.elmundo.es/documentos/2004/03/espana/atentados11m/suicidas.html some managed to flee to other nations) were found guilty and sentenced: http://www.elmundo.es/documentos/2004/03/espana/atentados11m/juicio/procesados/index.html to see the faces, click above to read the details about everyone.

OTOH there were many things left unclear (until today it has not been made clear which of two explosves were used as obviously the Aznar Government ordered the documents to be either falsificated or withdrawn as they wanted it to be ETA), and only a week ago it was proven almost withoubt doubt that one of the guys sentenced to life could no way have planted the bomb as the witnesses (one lady from Rumania, who got paid 60.000 Euros by state for damage to hearing testified having seen him in wagon 4, half a year later a cousin of her appeared and testified - getting 49.ooo Euros for damage to his hearing - to have seen him planting the bomb in wagon 6, and another year later another cousin appeared - getting 35.000 Euros for psycholgical sequels - stated that she had seen him in wagon 7) had testified to have seen him at a time where there are several clear indices (other, more credible witnesses) that he was 50 km away at that times doing physical exercise in a studio and in none of the wagons. This was documented by the investigators, but withheld from the trial on purpose (he got sentenced on the witnesses statements), looks we might face a juridical error with a lot of political consequences.

In these circumstances it is even less understandable that nobody - including the victims  families - have been allowed to see and/or review the investigation results, they are a state secret (not surprisingly it was shown that the explosives - probably, as the type never got established without doubt - came from a guy who was employed by the Guardia Civil as an undercover to expose ETA; also not surprisingly at least one of the material actors proven withoubt doubt also was a CNI - Secret Service -  undercover agent and according to him had informed state some one week earlier).

Lots of stuff that does not make sense, and I cannot see why the government would not finally open the investigation data if they do not have a lot to hide...

aye, state secrets, its amazing how quickly one can get shut up, when there are state secrets involved. That is unless of course, it is to your parties advantage to give away state secrets, just ask Dick Cheney or his trusty sidekick, 'Scooter'.

Dont get me started!

To be honest, this is probably just a tragic blip.  After all, the UK government could do absolutely anything it wants to and claim it as the war on Terror.  Who would support the Irish Republican terrorists then?

People like Gerry Adams know this all too well and Im sure they are secretly working towards getting the criminals that did it.

Its particularly galling for me as Ive spent some time in NI through the years and really though this was over.  After all, we are all bloody supposed to be Europeans now and economically, Eire is in a worse state than the UK!
